William Wray has spent most of his life in California, with early training at the Art Students League in New York. Before turning fully to painting, he worked for many years as a cartoonist focused on painted imagery, a background that continues to inform the directness and immediacy of his work.

Over time, Wray has brought together a wide range of influences, shaping a visual language that reimagines the legacy of California regional painting. He gravitates toward subjects that are often overlooked — industrial edges, forgotten structures, and in-between spaces — and approaches them with a seriousness usually reserved for more traditional landscapes.

His paintings balance the discipline of realism with the urgency of abstraction. Energetic marks and expressive surfaces meet careful observation, creating a kind of realistic expressionism that sits comfortably between two worlds. Wray’s ongoing goal is to use this hybrid approach to engage the contemporary art conversation while staying rooted in the everyday scenes that define his practice.
