Alyssa Monks is recognized for paintings that challenge conventional realism by seamlessly merging meticulous representation with expressive abstraction. Using layers of glass, water, steam, translucent surfaces, and foliage, she compresses and reconfigures space, creating compositions in which foreground and background shift and dissolve into one another. Her richly textured brushwork emphasizes the physicality of paint, recording each gesture and decision while reinforcing the emotional presence of the artist's hand.
Monks' paintings have been exhibited extensively in both solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and internationally. Her recent solo exhibition, Where Longing Meets Limits, was presented at MM Fine Art Gallery in 2023. Other notable exhibitions include Intimacy at the Kunst Museum in Ahlen, Germany, and Reconfiguring the Body in American Art, 1820–2009 at the National Academy Museum of Fine Arts in New York.
Her work is represented in numerous public and private collections, including those of Savannah College of Art and Design, Somerset Art Association, Fullerton College, the Seavest Collection, The Bennett Collection, and collectors George Loening, Eric Fischl, Howard Tullman, Gerrity Lansing, Danielle Steel, Alec Baldwin, and Luciano Benetton. In 2015, Monks delivered a TEDx talk at Indiana University discussing her artistic practice, which is available on TED.com. She was also recognized by Graphic Design Degree Hub as one of the world's most influential living women artists and, in 2018, her paintings were prominently featured in the sixth and final season of the FX television series The Americans.
Monks began painting in oils as a child. She studied at The New School in New York before earning a Bachelor of Arts from Boston College in 1999, where she also spent time studying painting at Lorenzo de' Medici in Florence, Italy. She received her Master of Fine Arts from the New York Academy of Art in 2001 and completed an artist residency at Fullerton College in 2006. Alongside her studio practice, Monks has lectured and taught at universities and institutions around the world, continuing to mentor artists through workshops, lectures, and educational programs.
