Alyssa Monks is recognized for paintings that challenge conventional realism by merging meticulous representation with expressive abstraction. Through translucent surfaces, she compresses and reconfigures space, allowing foreground and background to shift and dissolve. Her richly texture brushwork emphasizes the physicality of paint while reinforcing the emotional presence of the artist's hand.
Monks has exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and internationally. Her recent solo exhibition, Where Longing Meets Limits, was presented at MM Fine Art in 2023. Other notable exhibitions include Intimacy at the Kunstmuseum Ahlen in Germany and Reconfiguring the Body in American Art, 1820–2009 at the National Academy Museum in New York.
Her work is held in numerous public and private collections, including the Savannah College of Art and Design, Somerset Art Association, Fullerton College, the Seavest Collection, and The Bennett Collection, as well as the collections of Eric Fischl, Danielle Steel, Alec Baldwin, and Luciano Benetton. In 2015, Monks delivered a TEDx talk on her artistic practice, and in 2018, her paintings were prominently featured in the final season of FX’s The Americans.
Monks earned a B.A. from Boston College in 1999, studying painting at Lorenzo de’ Medici in Florence, and an M.F.A. from the New York Academy of Art in 2001. She completed an artist residency at Fullerton College in 2006 and continues to mentor artists through workshops, lectures, and educational programs worldwide.
